7 min read

Let’s make a hair growth oil blend together that is simple, effective, and adaptable.

Hair oiling was a game changer for me in my hair growth journey, and I have now witnessed the power of hair oiling for thousands of other women around the world! Today, let’s learn how to make a simple hair supportive oil blend at home.

My Hair Oiling Story

(The power of oils and herbs)

Hair oiling helped me to grow my hair from chin length to tailbone length, when for my lifetime previously, it was never able to grow nearly that long.

Let’s learn how to make an all natural herbal hair oil that can help your hair to grow long, strong, thick, and healthy.  How does this work? Well, before synthetic chemicals and pharmaceuticals, people used herbs for medicine, and used them on their scalps. Oils, like coconut, olive, jojoba, argan, you name it, have also been used on hair and scalps for ages. But when you combine the power of herbs and high quality carrier oils, magic can truly happen.

Today I will be sharing how to make an adapted and simplified version of my classic herbal hair growth oil - a formula that I have personally been perfecting for over a decade, and that has now been used by thousands of happy customers all around the world. This recipe uses traditional Ayurvedic herbs, along with powerful essential oils and one new ingredient that I’m sure you have in your kitchen right now, which I have never talk about before.

So let’s talk about the ingredients we will be using, and then we will share the making process.

Herbal Hair Growth Oil Ingredients

This recipe is highly adaptable. So if you prefer one type of oil that I have not included, or you don’t like one of the oils I mention, feel free to use the oils you prefer! Also, I will be using three carrier oils today for my base, but if you prefer to keep things ultra simple and just use one carrier oil, go for it. The true magic of this recipe is in the combination of the herbs infused into the carrier oil.

We will be using a curated mixture of three basic, highly therapeutic oils for scalp and hair. Let’s talk briefly about the benefits of each oil for scalp and hair, as we begin mixing our all star hair growth recipe.

Fractionated coconut oil has small enough particles to be able to penetrate into the hair strand, unlike most other oils. It is also naturally anti-fungal, so it can help your scalp remain a healthy environment for hair to grow. Fractionated coconut oil, unlike raw coconut it oil, is liquid at room temperature, and much lighter than raw coconut oil. In fact, it is often used in so called “dry oils”.

Castor oil is loved by many and felt to be the “Mercedes” of hair growth oils. It contains many beneficial nutrients and compounds needed for healthy skin, hair follicles, and hair.

Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax, this is one of the closest oils to our own natural scalp sebum, and is nice and light as well.

In combination, these oils will form the perfect base for our herbal actives.

Let’s talk about the herbs that will deliver the ultimate scalp and hair magic in this recipe!

Herbs in Our Herbal Hair Growth Oil

This oil blend will be a simplified version of my herbal hair enriching oil that I have been making for a decade, and selling for a few years now.

We are keeping the two main herbal stars - fenugreek and amla, which are Ayurvedic herbs, meaning that they are used in Indian traditional medicine. Both of them have also been studied in relation to their effect on hair and scalp care, and their ability to boost hair strand thickness and overall hair density.

We will be using these herbs in a whole format, which I think works better for infusion and is much more beginner friendly because there won’t be any sludge of oil mixed with herbal powders at the end of the process.

Whole fenugreek seeds are a main herbal component of the recipe.

Fenugreek seeds contain lots of B vitamins, lecithin, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, iron, and protein. Fenugreek contains bio active compounds that fight bacteria and fungus in the scalp, as well as stimulating hair follicle function. Fenugreek is also conditioning for the hair.

Next up, amla.

Also known as Indian Gooseberry, amla is a very rich source of vitamin C, which is used for collagen synthesis. Amla is also naturally astringent and can help maintain a healthy scalp environment. Amla helps to thicken and strengthen hair strands over time, and increase overall hair density.

Finally, we are adding something new to this herbal hair growth oil blend: coffee beans!

One of the things that helped me a lot during my recent hair shedding episode was topical caffeine.

Caffeine has been studied head to head with 2% topical minoxidil, a pharmaceutical hair loss medication, and proven to achieve virtually identical results in terms of stopping hair shedding and regrowing hair.

Coffee beans are a rich source of oil soluble caffeine, which is important here since most forms of caffeine used in cosmetic preparations are only water soluble. It is also a really nice way to use a whole food that most people have access to, to get the amazing benefits of topical caffeine into our herbal hair growth oil.

So let’s go ahead and add these into our oil blend.

How to Make It

It is so simple to make this wonderfully effective hair enriching oil blend.

Today we will learn two methods of making your own herbal infused oils- one using an amazing device called the fuzetrix, which I will talk about more in a moment, and the latter method using a jar.

The jar method will have more variable results, and will take more time to infuse, but it can get the job done.

The video for this blog article is sponsored by fuzetrix, which is a device especially designed for everyday people to easily make herbal infused oils in their home kitchens. Traditional stovetop methods of herbal infusion take over 200 minutes, and can burn delicate nutrients, and cold infusion takes a full month and has highly variable results. Fuzetrix delivers a hyper -pure, premium infusion in only 20 minutes.

So, let’s go ahead and make this hair growth oil blend!

First, we will go ahead and combine all of our oils. We have the fractionated coconut oil, the jojoba oil, and the castor oil. We will give these a good mix, and then it is time to add these herbs.

Step 1: golden carrier oils being poured into a glass measuring cup to combine the hair growth oil base.

So we will add in the fenugreek, amla, and coffee beans, and then let the fuzetrix work its magic.

Step 3: pouring carrier oils over fenugreek, amla, and coffee beans in a glass measuring cup to start the herbal infusion.

If you are using the jar method, you will sit this mixture in a cool dark place for ideally about 3 weeks, stirring once a day if you can. If you are using the Fuzetrix, this process will only take 20 minutes, with no stirring required.

So, we will let the herbal infusion work its magic, and then move on to the next steps. Almost done!

If you are using the jar method, then you can either simply allow the herbs to settle to the bottom, or you can run the oil through a strainer to remove the herbs. If you used powdered herbs, then I recommend straining it with cheesecloth or allowing the sediment to settle to the bottom.

I recommend storing your oil blend in an amber glass bottle or jar if you have one, but if not, simply store in a cool dark place.

Taking the Blend to the Next Level

Here is where we can make our already powerful herbal hair growth oil even more powerful. This is by utilizing the power of essential oils.

Hand holding a bottle of lavender essential oil over a bowl of herbal hair oil, ready to add it to the blend.

Essential oils have been used for centuries for hair and body care, and are very potent substances, so we need to use them with care.

We are keeping this blend nice and simple today.

We will just use some rosemary essential oil, which has been studied and shown to be extremely effective for hair growth, and some lavender oil, which is soothing, antibacterial, and can balance scalp oil production. Both of these in combination have a lovely floral and herbaceous scent. So let’s add these into our oil blend, and gently mix it.

Using the Herbal Hair Growth Oil

Apply to your scalp with a dropper bottle or hair applicator bottle at least once a week. Massage in well. If you are sleeping on it, be sure to protect your pillow with an old towel or better yet by wearing a waterproof hair cap.

If using as a scalp treatment, leave in for 3-12 hours , and then wash your hair, preferably with a natural, gentle shampoo.

Alternatively, between hair washes, you can also apply a small amount of this as a hair length serum and conditioning treatment. The key is to only use a small amount! Too much will make your hair look greasy. The correct amount will make your hair look more shiny, especially if you comb or brush it through afterward.

Store this oil blend in a cool dark place and avoid putting your fingers into it to preserve shelf life. To level up, you could even store it in an amber glass bottle, which are available inexpensively online.

I hope this has inspired you to try making your own herbal hair growth oil today!

Herbal Hair Growth Oil Recipe

Yields about 8 oz

1.25 oz castor oil,

4.75 oz  fractionated coconut oil

2.5 oz jojoba

1 -1.5 tbs coffee beans*

4 tbs whole fenugreek seeds*

2-3 tbs dried amla*

30 drops rosemary

30 drops lavender

Instructions:

1) Combine all carrier oils.

2) Roughly chop coffee beans and dried amla (unless using powdered versions). Add them into your carrier oils. Infuse either using jar method or Fuzetrix method. Afterwards, strain out herbs. Add in essential oils and stir well. Store in a cool dark place.

3) Apply to scalp using either a dropper bottle or a hair applicator bottle. Leave on scalp for 4-12 hours, and washing out using your preferred shampoo or other washing method.

Recipe notes

  • You can use whole herbs as I did, or the powdered versions. Powdered versions are a little more convenient to infuse initially, but will leave a sludge on the bottom after infusion. You can either strain this out with cheesecloth or allow it to settle to the bottom of your jar.

  • If using whole coffee beans, I recommend roughly chopping them first.

Someone gave me some green (unroasted) whole coffee beans. Would you use those or do you think there are benefits to using the roasted?
