What Causes Sudden Hair Loss? A Holistic Approach to Healing

What if hair loss isn’t something you fix once and for all, but something you learn to understand, support, and heal from at every level of your life?

For many women, the journey to hair growth is not linear. I’ve experienced multiple episodes of shedding, triggered by postpartum changes, restrictive diets, stress, emotional trauma, and even misguided hair care habits.

Through each experience, I’ve learned that sudden hair loss isn’t just a surface-level issue. It’s often a signal. A message from your body, asking for deeper attention.

Hair is deeply reflective of our internal state. Like the canary in the coal mine, it’s often the first to react when something is off in our bodies or lives. This blog shares the holistic interventions I’ve personally used to stop hair shedding, regrow hair naturally, and support long-term hair health.

Understanding the Root Causes of Sudden Hair Loss

Before diving into solutions, it’s important to acknowledge that sudden hair loss can stem from many interconnected factors:

Woman with gray hair sits while another combs her hair indoors. Soft lighting, plants in background. Calm, caring atmosphere.

Hormonal changes (e.g. postpartum, perimenopause, thyroid imbalance)

  • Hormones regulate the hair growth cycle. When they shift dramatically, such as after childbirth or during perimenopause, more hairs can prematurely enter the shedding phase (telogen).

Emotional stress and trauma

  • High stress elevates cortisol, which disrupts the body’s natural rhythms (including hair growth.) Emotional trauma can shock the system, leading to diffuse shedding known as telogen effluvium.

Dietary deficiencies or restrictive eating

  • Hair needs protein, iron, B vitamins, and essential fats. When the body is undernourished, it prioritizes vital organs over hair, leading to fallout.

Lifestyle disruptions (e.g. lack of sleep, overexertion)

  • Sleep is when the body repairs. Chronic exhaustion or poor rest dysregulates hormones and slows follicle function.

Topical issues such as product buildup or harsh treatments

  • Harsh shampoos, excessive styling, and silicone-heavy products can irritate or clog the scalp, weakening follicles and triggering fallout.

Topical Interventions to Support Hair Growth

Scalp Oiling

Person applying hair oil with a dropper to someone's hair. Bright indoor setting with green trees visible outside the window.

Oiling the scalp has been used for centuries to nourish, stimulate, and restore balance. It’s also been the #1 staple in reviving my hair, no matter the cause.

I have spent the last 8 years honing my own recipe that uses a 14-ingredient formula that assists in all 3 phases of the hair growth cycle. If you’d like to see what people are saying about it and learn how each ingredient helps revive and retain, click here.

Scalp Massage

Combined with oiling or used on its own, massage boosts circulation and helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your hair follicles.

Gentle Cleansing Methods

Instead of modern shampoos that strip your scalp:

Herbal & Natural Treatments

  • Tea rinses (e.g. black or green tea) with caffeine to block DHT

  • Onion juice for natural sulfur and follicle stimulation

  • DMSO to enhance absorption of beneficial oils (requires proper dilution and care)

Lifestyle Habits That Influence Sudden Hair Loss

Topical treatments only go so far if your lifestyle is working against you. Addressing stress, sleep, and nervous system regulation is foundational.

  • Daily rest: Even a 15-minute nap can reset your stress hormones

  • Prioritize deep, quality sleep: Especially during nighttime hours

  • Emotional processing: Journaling, prayer, or EMDR/tapping

  • Acupressure and acupuncture: For hormone and energy balance

  • Track your hormonal rhythms and work with a practitioner if needed

Dietary Support for Hair Regrowth

A woman with short blonde hair looks bored while eating a salad at a wooden table. A glass of water is beside her in a kitchen setting.

Your hair is made of protein and it reflects what you eat and how consistently you nourish your body.

  • Eat more protein: Especially complete, bioavailable sources

  • Don’t skip meals: This can put your body into a stress response, halting hair growth

  • Reduce excess sugar and replace with whole fruits

  • Watch out for restrictive diets: These can lead to deficiencies, especially in iron, B-vitamins, and essential fatty acids

Emotional Awareness and Hair Health

Hair loss is often more than physical, it can be emotional. Big life transitions, suppressed emotions, or ongoing stress can lead to hormonal imbalances and visible shedding.

Take time to ask:

  • What major changes have I gone through recently?

  • Is my body asking for rest, softness, or nourishment?

  • Where am I carrying tension or unresolved emotion?

Woman in green top and beige skirt walks alone on a snowy rural road, flanked by trees. Overcast sky adds a somber mood.

For me, returning to scalp oiling has always been an anchor. It's grounding, nourishing, and deeply therapeutic.

My own handcrafted oil, developed over years of experimentation, supports all 3 phases of the hair growth cycle (healing the scalp, encouraging new growth, and strengthening to retain) while keeping my routine simple and effective.

This formula helped me regrow my hair from chin-length to tailbone-length. It’s now been used by thousands of women worldwide.
